SAGE

Objectives

Students in the SAGE "speciality" get a double training:

- on the biogeochemical processes controlling the quality of the aquatic ecosystems inside their regional environments,

- on the technical instruments which are used for water management, including water treatment, drainage and distribution, or the major policy instruments, in operation in various regions of the world.

After obtaining their diploma in the SAGE speciality, students may chose to improve their academic curriculum and prepare a PhD in environmental sciences, in biogeochemistry or water treatment, or to start their professional life in private or public organisations involved in water management.

The SAGE speciality is made of two options sharing a common platform of three modules. The three modules of the common platform cover the fundamental classes of processes at work in natural ecosystem and in water treatment:: (i) physical chemistry, (ii) microbiology and (iii) hydrodynamics.

Beyond the common platform, and depending on their professional objectives, students can chose advanced courses in each of the three previous topics. It is expected that the students willing to prepare a PhD would chose these advanced courses.

The courses on water treatment and processes at the catchment scale (hydrology and water quality) are primarily conceived for the students wishing to turn to professional life immediately after their masters. Depending on their scientific objectives, students willing to prepare o PhD would also take some of them.

Finally, courses devoted to water management are proposed to widen the field of competence of the students and facilitate their professional insertion.

Organisation

To order to make the SAGE speciality attractive and relevant, a great flexibility enables the students, in agreement with director of studies, to adapt to cursus to their professional project, using the resources offered inside the SAGE speciality. Three fundamental course units are accessible to all the students (UE1, UE2 and UE3), they are mandatory for the students willing to pursue with a PhD, two modules out of the 6 must be followed by the students of the students willing to enter professional life immediately after the masters. The UE4 ("Humanities") is mandatory to all students. This unit is based on projects which makes it possible to the students to be confronted with multidisciplinary projects with students coming from other disciplines. The organisation of conferences in foreign language is also part of this unit. The students willing to pursue with a PhD will choose an additional UE. Students willing to enter professional life will choose 5 optional UE. The first semester provides 60 ECTS.

The second semester is entirely made of a training period inside a laboratory for the students willing to prepare a PhD, or in a firm for the others.

Students willing to prepare PhD must choose only one optional module during the first semester. Adapted courses are also possible.

Jobs opportunities of the speciality SAGE

The laboratories for the research students, directly associated to the SAGE speciality are Cereve (ENPC, Paris 12 and ENGREF), the LGE (Paris 7, IPGP and CNRS), the CEMAGREF (QHAN, Antony) and the UMR Sisyphus (NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, Paris 6 and EMP). Every year several doctorants is recruited by each of these teams. But it is not about the only outlet of the WISE speciality there, in research terms. Opportunities exist in particular in the form of contracts CIFRE between master, manufacturers of the domain of the water (EDF, Véolia, Ondéo) and research laboratories above.
